Case Study: £600,000 of Historic Charity Income Recovered

Approximately £600,000 of historic income recovered at a national social-care charity, alongside work to strengthen service economics, billing processes and financial oversight.

This anonymised case study describes David Roberts’ previous charity finance leadership and transformation assignment. It provides relevant experience behind GAP’s income recovery service; it was not delivered under the new success-fee offer.

Why the work mattered

Reliable service-level income information helps a charity understand whether it is receiving what it has earned and whether services are financially sustainable. The assignment combined income recovery with wider changes across Finance, Operations and HR.

What David did

  • Improved service-level income and margin analysis, connecting contract, service and finance information.
  • Worked across teams to identify missed income and follow through on amounts due.
  • Connected contract and service-rate information, rostering, finance systems and business-intelligence reporting within the wider improvement programme.
  • Strengthened responsibilities, billing processes and team capability to support ongoing financial management.

The results

Approximately £600,000 of historic income recovered.

The wider assignment also secured around £2 million of fee uplifts in the reported year. The historic recovery and fee uplifts are separate measures and should not be added together as a recurring annual benefit.

The work combined a financial result with clearer service-level information and stronger processes. The relevance for other charities is the method: understand entitlement, connect operational and financial evidence, investigate differences and follow through on valid amounts due.

What this means for a new review

A review may identify missed fee increases, unbilled services or contractual underpayments. Those are areas to investigate, rather than a claim that each caused the historic recovery described here. Results depend on the client’s contracts, records and circumstances; the previous outcome is not a forecast or guarantee.
